Decentralizing the Web and the Industrial Internet: an Alternative Solution to Data Control
Technologically speaking, the Internet is a decentralized network: The infrastructure is spread across the globe and there is no single actor whose sudden termination would bring an end to it. However, that does not mean that all applications on top of the Internet are necessarily decentralized, since many of them depend on infrastructure controlled by only their organization. This chapter aims to raise awareness over the potential advantages that decentralization, as opposed to a fully centralised system, could bring to digital innovations in general. More specifically, we shed light over the current technical, as well as legal (with a focus on data protection and IP law) challenges related to decentralization in order to shed light over its potential repercussions in the context of the industrial internet.
